ESSSSSAYYYYYYYYY

Question: Marc Prensky's "Emerging online life of the digital native" and Dave Weinberger's "A New World" both present different views of contemporary internet users. In light of your own experiences with new technologies do you think they are accurate portrayals? Discuss why or why not with specific examples.

TECHNOLOGY IS THE LIFE OF THE FUTURE!!!

Life is continuously changing, each day, month, and year sees the light and beginning of a new technological advance. Some are good, some are great, and some are bad. Marc Prensky published an article called “Emerging online life of the digital native” (Prensky, 2004) it discusses how the new generation - “digital natives” use new technology. Prensky portrays technology as engulfing digital natives life, saying that “online life has become an entire strategy for how to live, survive and thrive in the 21st century” (Prensky, 2004). Prensky states that digital natives are “not just using technology differently today, but are approaching their life and their daily activities differently because of the technology” (2004, Prensky). Prensky highlights the possibilities of the internet whereas; David Weinberger highlights the differences between the real world and the web highlighting the dangers of the internet. Weinberger says that the web is “more alien than it first seems,” (Weinberger, 2002) as people on chat sites and social networking sites may and often are not who they say they are. Weinberger states that “the web has sent a jolt through our culture, zapping our economy, our ideas about the sharing of creative works, and possibly even institutions such as religion and government” (Weinberger, 2002) . Prensky and Weinberger both express different views on contemporary users. In light of my own experiences I believe the web has many benefits if used in the correct manor. I believe that technology shapes the growing mind. The younger the mind, the more supple it is (Healy, 2000). The world is constantly changing; humans are constantly inventing new machines, new cars and new technology. The web is just the next stage in our history or “evolution”. The internet contains millions of websites and therefore endless opportunities. The following aspects of the internet will be discussed in further detail; e-mail, instant messenger, researching (school assignments, general interests etc.) and online auction sites (ebay).

Email has become an important method of business communication. If used properly it is an extremely efficient and effective form of communication that can be used to transmit all kinds of electronic data instantly. Prensky expresses the effectiveness of e-mail, and instant messaging online. He mentions that e-mail is a great way of communication because it is virtually cost free, easy and can be sent to multiple people instantly (Prensky, 2004). However, Weinberger portrays e-mails and instant messenger as another contributing factor to the new generation’s poor social and “face to face” skills. Weinberger believes that we are “falling into email relationships that, stretching themselves over years, "imperceptibly deepen, like furrows worn into a stone hallway by the traffic of slippers” (Weinberger, 2002). I agree with Weinberger in saying that instant messenger along with mobile phone text messaging is affecting the social relationships of the younger generation. However, it is an extremely beneficial technological advance in many other ways. “Email allows the immediate transfer of electronic documents, photos and PDF files to multiple precipitants for no cost” (Benefits of email and internet, 2008). An email will be saved within the email account until the receiver is ready to read the document. This saves paper and space within the household or business (Benefits of email and internet, 2008). My previous experiences with email lead me to believe that email and instant messenger are both very effective ways of transferring data, sending letters/files, and keeping in touch with others around the world. However, extreme caution needs to be taken when using instant messenger facilities.

The internet is the most comprehensive electronic archive of written material representing our world and peoples' opinions, concerns, and desires (Eysenbach, 2001). The internet is used for researching topics of interest, assessments, projects and news articles every day. Prensky uses examples to outline how exactly how much the ‘Digital Natives’ rely on the internet. “The web is now the preferred means of finding a job and chances are good that your Digital Native son or daughter will be finding some or all of their dates online” (Prensky, 2004). The internet is fast becoming the main rout of communication, research, and everyday life. Weinberger’s view of the internet is portrayed in a different manor compared to Prensky. He expresses how the new generation relies on the internet so much that it is changing who we are and how we act. Weinberger states that “we are rewriting ourselves on the Web...saying things we might not have expected...we are no longer aware of the real world” (Weinberger, 2002). In light of my own experiences I believe that relationships are changing and the ways we go about meeting new people and experiencing new experiences is different due to the capabilities of the internet. Many medical journals support my belief in saying that “individuals who seek out sexual partners online have a 30% higher chance of divorce” (How Internet Addiction Is Affecting Lives, 2006). The internet is affecting our relationships, and also plays a role in the decreased activity levels among our children. “Computers and the internet are distracting our children from physical activity and social sports with their friends” (Orlowski, 2005). There are many different aspects of the internet, as with everything in life there is the goods and the bads.

The development of the internet and the World Wide Web is a technological breakthrough. It has many benefits but, with great benefits there always comes great risks. The internet is changing the way of the world, the way of life, and the way people interact. This happens with all technological advances. For example the invention of the motor vehicle allowed people to travel distances faster, however, cars are expensive, and pollute the environment (Technology, 2009). Prensky and Weinberger both portray many good points about the internet and how it is changing the everyday ways of life. I believe that the internet is a great aspect of life; however, I believe that the internet needs to be monitored and used in the correct ways. The internet can be a very dangerous place, and caution needs to be taken when visiting selected sites. “The Web is a world we've made for one another. It can only be understood within a web of ideas that includes our culture's foundational thoughts, with human spirit at every joining point” (Weinberger 2002).

My Art

Ok... lets get one thing straight first... im not a very artistic person.
I go throught stages of drawing. they last about 2 months and then i forget about it. haha.

Due to moving out of home, most of my drawings are at my mums place. however, i have this one at my place... I took at photo of them and then i have uploaded my photos to my blog.

I drew this picture in 2005 for my boyfriend when i was in hospital having a shoulder reconstruction. It shows all the things he enjoys doing. His name is leroy but people call him L-roy. He loves looking a Ebay, he owns at 1982 model Hilux short wheel base which he has been building, He goes roo shooting and pig hunting... hence the gun... and was born on the 11 december 1989... thats about it aye...

I also took this photo of the beautiful sunset in Fiji last december.

Its a great memory of an awesome holiday.

I'm also have this artwork on the Doctor.. Valentino Rossi, 46.

It is not completed yet. however i will get around to it one day.

I hope this makes my blog shine...

73 million working children are less than
10 years old.

Week 10 Lecture... Video Game Studies

PC, CONSOLE, ONLINE, ARCADE, and MOBILE
are all different types of VIDEO games.

Did you know that a study conducted in 2005 found that 41% of females aged between 25- 40 years addmitted to playing video games, and 59% of men in the same age group?
...I recon thats pritty close stats if you ask me...
and the incidence of females playing video games is INCREASING.
20 - 40 year olds dominate PC and CONSOLE gaming.

The WII is a totally new revolution to gaming... with its up and downs...

THere is 3 reasons to why people muck around with kind of crap:

1. social science approach...
* efects of the game on people?

Does playing a violent game make a person violent?

or... do people play the games because it is fun to blow things up but they know that cant do it in real life? who knows its all just crap anyway

2. Humanities approach
* some geeks study the meaning of each game.
they enjoy playing the game because they like the story line, or the reason for doing what they have have to do?

3. Industry and engineering approach
* Technology enthusiasts enjoy watching the development of games, and the new technology that can be invented. for example the wii v's playstation 3

Im not interested in the video game industry... i think it is a waste of time and money

However... this is something that needs more attention and money...

Weeeek 9 Lecture..

....HOW TO TEACH YOURSELF SOFTWARE....

Week 9... MID SEMESTER BREAK IN LESS THAN 48 HOURS.

tODAY WE HAD a great l e c t u r e on teaching yourself... SOFTWARE.

here is a list of the steps you neeeeeed to follow:

  • First find out...what you need to do and the DO IT... ok so it might not be that easy. dont just stare at the screen, push button and play around.

  • Now you need to learn what you need to know. LEARN IT...dont just think you know it. LEARN IT

  • YOU..need to know and understand that you cant learn software in a couple of days. software is complicated. Knowing how to save a document or open on is not classified as KNOWING HOW TO USE A PROGRAM.

  • BEGIN BY PLAYING. "make something, anything. it will make you feel better. And then you will hit a brick wall'

  • Work out what are the most common features among ALL software packages.. THEY ALL HAVE AN ARROW SELECT KEY.

  • Make sure you always save your docment. If you dont know how to save. LEARN IT. save your work 50000000000000000000000000000000000 times. and never overwrite the same file, just create a new one. that way if u do something wrong, you can go back a step. :)

  • If you still cant use the FRICKEN file USE THE HELP BAR PROVIDED BY THE PROGRAMMe.

  • but.....the help section sucks donkeys balls.

  • If you still cant work the damm software out... SEARCH IT... thats the reson google is worth the money it is...

  • Join a gay forum. become a forum ego maniac. ask questions and get stupid answers.

  • LYDNA tutorial companies... they are good. but video and book tutorials suck.. dont buy anything. not even food. you smell like an off ham sandwhich that has been sitting under a car seat for 2 weeks.

BUT FINALLY....

AS SOON AS YOU LEARN THE STUPID PACKAGE IT WILL CHANGE AND A NEW ONE WILL BECOME AVAILABLE... SUCKER.

.ITS ALL ABOOUT THE CONTENT.

EVERYONE SHOULD BE EDUCATED.

What do you think of the Australian Government's plans to censor the internet (the so-called "Clean Feed")??? What place does censorship have in a democracy?

The whole idea of putting a censor on the internet is completely absurd, who is to define what sites are considered appropriate and inappropriate?

Everyone has diffent thoughts, ideas, and ways in which they see life. One parent may think it is wrong for their child to stuble across religion readings on the internet because it is not what they belive in... Yet another parent may appose of a child seeing a female in her swimmers when searching something into google... it could be a good idea, but WHERE WOULD WE DRAW THE LINE AND WHO WOULD DICTATE WHAT WAS CENSORED AND WHAT WAS NOT?

I do however aggree that some things should not be processed on the internet. I once looked at a list of potentially banable wedsites. There was also an article asking the public of anorexia websites should be banned as it is giving this information to our children...(i think that is just plane crazy) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/chat/r/t-10021482/index.html Some of the sites could not in any way, shape or form, be considered bad. By allowing the government to control what we view on the internet, is just another way in attempting to control or shape our country to suit what ever needs required.

...Starvation...

A clean water system would save more than 10 million children from dying of dehydration and Diarrhea in 3rd world countries each year.

This is present in your world

weeek 7 TUTORIAL

For our tutorial in week 7 we are to download some freeware apps, use them, muse them and write a little about our experience with them.

Dexpot will allow you to set up and customize virtual desktops within Windows such that each can behave as a seperate workspace with its own icons and runnning apps. It offers powerful tools to customize and manage these virtual desktops in a nice intuitive graphical user interface.

It creates up to 20 virtual desktops; you can navigate these through the system tray icon or using a number of cool looking gizmos that you can choose from.

Dextop offers high customizability: each desktop can have its own name, icons/files/shortcuts, wallpaper, screen resolutions, running apps, transparency of windows, etc. You can also set rules for each desktop, e.g. to open a certain app when you enter a certain desktop for the first time or every single time, etc.

Froom downloading this program i have been able to organise my desktop and find thing better. Its a new computer man... lovin' it

One last thing:

The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income.

weeek 7 lecture already Yo'

Wow...Last week... (week 7) i had 3 mid semester exams...
so here i am in week 8 posting my blogs from week 7.

...So here we go...
TODAY... WE SAW THE RETURN OF THE ONE AND ONLY MR JASON

He blabbered on about freeware apps or should i say "free software" that can be downloaded from the internet very quickly.

...ALL COMPUTER IN SOME WAY SHAPE OR FORM ARE CONECTED TO THE INTERNET...

mR jAsOn used the website portableapps.com This entitles people to readily download software so it can be used on a portable means. Other site that may interest you are freewaregenius, and sourcefoge. IT'S ALL FREE. CHECK IT OUT yO'. There are even programs that can find your deleted programs and theirfore bring them BACK TO LIFE.

Through out the lecture Jason taked and talked and talked about these free sites to download stuff. and then right at the end... started to discuss 3 open-source software issues.

These R:

ONE: VIRUSES

TWO: THE ECONOMY (dontations)
THREE: PEOPLE JUST DONT CARE ABOUT ALL THE CRAP NO MORE. THEY DOWNLOAD IT ANYWAY!

So that was our lecture for weeeeek 7.

hope your enjoyed it. :)

I'll leave you with one last thing:

*Hunger & Malnutrition
*Every 7 seconds a child dies from hunger.
*24,000 people die each day from hunger and hunger related diseases = 8.8 million people yearly will be dead due to lack of food.
*Hunger kills more people than AIDS, malaria and TB combined. There are 850 million (equal to the combined population of the US, Canada and the EU) chronically hungry people in the world while there is more than enough food in the world to feed everyone.

Another poverty statistic to finish off my blog...

This should not be happening... if everyone got behind it, we could rid poverty

http://www.povertyprogram.com/hr.html

The UN estimates that almost 6 million children were in forced and bonded labor. 300,000 in armed conflict. Almost 2 million in prostitution and pornography. 600,000 drug trafficking. And over 1 million in slavery.

Tute,.. Weeks 5/6 Internet Derived Short Film

BLACK BUTTON
GOD WILL NOT SUFFER YOU TO BE TEMPTER ABOVE THAT YE ARE ABLE.
BUT WILL WITH THE TEMPTATION TO ALSO MAKE A WAY TO ESCAPE.

I chose this short film as it makes yourself think and ask the personal question ... "Would i press the button if i was him?" or "Would i have taken the Key?"

This short film also used many film shots and techniques that i have been taught in previous NCT lectures...

The Film contained a

  • WHO... Mr Roberts... emphasized through a close up shot

  • WHAT... Choice between the button or the Key.... portrayed using a mid shot

  • WHEN... On his way to heaven or should i say.. Hell... A series of wide shots shows Mr Roberts bleeding, as he is given a choice from heaven (the key) or hell (the button)
"Eventually Mr Roberts, EVERYONES time is up"

  • WHERE... A white room, with nothing but 2 chairs, a key, button and a brief case... shown through a wide shot.

  • WHY... "Would i press the button if i was him?" or "Would i have taken the Key?"... A test of morals, and values... A big close up of the confusion and guilt on Mr Roberts face

  • HOW... A series of shots showing the Key, the Button, and Mr Roberts face all emphasizing the suspense to how Mr Roberts will get out of the situation.

The Film also put into play the rule of thirds and the 180 degree rule... Making the conversation between the two characters believable... It also enabled the viewer to relate to the film and fell the pain and guilt of Mr Roberts.

"10 MILLION DOLLARS TO PUSH A BUTTON"
"I'M LEAVING NOW" (Mr Roberts)
"YOU WILL FIND THE DOOR IS LOCKED"

WILD DOGS

Wild dogs is a short film created using a software package called Maya.
Wild Dogs uses no verbal language throughout the film.
The film is able to communicate the story to the viewer through music, and different film shots.

The opening scene is established with a long shot of a desert area, 1 tree, 2 dogs, 1 bone and a large carcass of some sort.

A series of medium wide shots shows one of the dogs abandon his small bone in order to get the larger carcass. However, a close up shot shows the same dog distressed and upset when he realizes that the carcass bones are too big, and the other dog has already claimed his other small bone...

The use of film techniques has enabled the whole story to be told without the use of language. Only language of the Cinema.
The first dog then bargains with the other dog to swap the carcass for the little bone, not to realize that the carcass can be broken down into man little bones.

I chose this film because of the use of camera angles, techniques, and music to tell a story. With the absence of verbal Communication.
This is a very clever short film and puts into play many of the aspects learn in our NCT lectures.

THIS SIDE UP
!!!Always expected to have trouble when you buy a MAC (hey Jouls)!!!

This film was chosen to enter my BLOG because of its amazing creativity, and entertainment.
The film is about someone trying to conform or keep up with the fast, continuously changing aspects of TECHNOLOGY.
...He not only waits 17 months for his music to download, but then only has a record player not a CD player....
The film, along with the one above do not use verbal language in order to tell the story.

GET THE LATEST MUSIC HITS
....DOWNLOAD....

A series of close up, and extreme close up shots emphasize the point of the slow download speed...
0.0001% COMPLETE
17 MONTHS TO GO
The use of long shots also places further emphasis on the time taken for the MAC to download music... as the mans house is almost empty... there is nothing else to entertain him, or help time pass by quicker.
The film uses a series of wide shots to emphasize just how long 17 months is...
With the man sleeping on his chair,
blowing scrumped up pieces of paper across his desk,
and then sleeping on his arm...

...In the end...
The download does complete,
....HOWEVER....
the man does not have a CD player, only a record player

This film emphasizes the point that technology is continuously changing.
In previous lectures we have discussed how rapidly technology changes in such short periods of time.

!!!DON'T BLINK OR YOUR IPOD WILL GO OUT OF FASHION!!!

I hate this...
Poverty should be a thing of the past

Lecture Week 4 - Timeline Big screen to the small screen

So...
I rocked up a little bit late to this lecture...
But thats what happens when you live in a house with 2 boys and they dont let you know when you run out of Milk....

...Anyway...
I did make it to the lecture at approx 8.12am
having to quickly catch up on the timeline notes i missed.
The lecture was titled...

BIG SCREEN TO THE SMALL SCREEN

Once upon a time... way back in 1895 CINEMA WAS BORN!
It was the 28th December when it all began
The Lumieres brothers presented the first viewing of a projected motion picture to many paying customers in the Salon Indien, Paris.
IT WAS THE WORLD FIRST MOVIE THEATRE!
The cinema screening included a 20 minute program which was made up of 10 short films with 20 screenings per day. By 1898 The Lumieries company had produced over 1,000 movie titles.

In 1897 the first real cinema building was built in Paris, and the next one was built in 1902 in Downtown Los' Angeles where a 200 seat electrical theatre was built. From 1909 onwards cinemas began to pop up everywhere.

In 1903 Edwin S. Porter produced THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. It was Americas first narrative film based on a real-life train heist. The film weighted in at one-real, 14 scenes and 10 minutes long.

NICKELODEONS = THE FIRST REAL MOVIE THEATRE
In 1902 Nickelodeons opened, the name comes from the admission charge of 1 nickel, and it
was open from early hours of the morning to late hours of the night.

:)

In 1906 we saw the birth of the first continuous full-length narrative feature film. With a running time of 60 minutes 'THE STORY OF THE KELLY GANG" was a film break-through.

In 1912 Television began to air serial programs. These were very popular just be
fore the Great War broke out. The first American serial was the Edisons Company "What happened to Mary" (1912), staring Mary Fuller.

From 1911 - 1919 the number of feature-length films increased from 2 - 646. Cinemas and movies palaces boomed. Definitely an INDUSTRY ON THE RISE.
In 1914 CHARLIE CHAPLIN was born as a movie star in his comedy 'Making a living'. Charlie Chaplin continued directing, writing, producing and acting in his own films.

1921 was a breakthrough for film artists. D.W Griffith's film DREAM STREET was considered the first film to use sound... we are getting closer to the technology we use today.

The most expensive film ever made for its time was in 1923 by Cecil B. DeMille's. The movie was his first version of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. The parting of the seas scene features only the best special effects.

1923...HOLLYWOOD... $21,000

In 1925 the first in flight movie was aired. It was a black and white silent film titled THE LOST WORLD. It was shown in a WW1 bomber during a flight from London to Paris.
ITS THE MILE HIGH CLUB.

1927 was the birth of voice recorded records... The Jazz singer was the first person to record a record with embedded voice overs.

Now things are getting interesting... In 1929 the first all color film was produced. It is called... On with the Snow.

1933 saw the birth of another cinema experience. It was known as the DRIVE IN THEATRE.

In
1937 Snow White and the seven dwarfs was produced by Walt Disney. It was the first full length animated color film that showed all characters talking.

In 1939 the Television was invented, And it was not until 1955 that movies were aired on television.

1963 saw the birth of another huge breakthrough in the film industry. Multiplex cinemas were developed. This enabled movie theatre's to preview more than one film at any one time. The next big film viewing breakthrough was in 1970 with the invention of the IMAX theatre. An extra large cinema.

In 1975 it was possible to hire a movie to take home and watch from BLOCKBUSTER.

1995
saw the birth of one of the best animated films of all time. TOY STORY. It was the first animated film created on computer.

1997 out with the VHS and in with the DVD.

2001...Guy Richie... THE HIRE
