Once Upon a time (30 years ago or maybe even more) telephones had parts of the alphabet on the key for each number. For example 5 had JKL.Back in the ancient days the first 3 numbers in a phone number were the first 3 letters of the city or suburb of the home or buisness. For example when trying to phone central. The first 3 digits of the phone number would be 236 corresponding with CEN on the phone.
The 3 numbers corresponding with 5 is J K and L, using these letters you can not make any English places. Therfore, HOLLYWOOD was encouraged to use the area code 555 to prevent real subscribers being harassed by members of the public trying out the phone numbers quoted on Hollywood movies.
